Group A BMW E30 M3s have won World Championship rallies and national championships, and Thierry Neuville and Dani Sordo have one in their garages. The BMW has more power than the 911, is slightly lighter, is equipped with a claw gearbox and – above all – has a front engine. It’s a completely different construction. It’s a decade apart from the Porsche I drove, and technologically it’s an era. The 911 has plenty of torque in the lower rev range and a synchronized gearbox. In M3 it’s the other way around! The BMW engine operates most efficiently at high speeds, up to 9,000 rpm. It’s like a kitcar, only with rear-wheel drive!
